How a finish & trim carpentry visit goes
Filler has a place and rotten structural wood is not it. Where a sill, a trim board or a deck board has gone soft, cutting it out and replacing it is the repair; filling it is postponing the repair and hiding it in the meantime.
Trim work is miters and scribes. Walls are not straight and corners are not square, and the difference between trim that looks installed and trim that looks fitted is entirely in how those joints are cut.

FAQ
Asked often about finish & trim carpentry
What is finish carpentry, and is it different from what a general contractor does?
Trim, crown molding, baseboards, door casing, wainscoting, window seats, shelving and built-ins — the woodwork you see. A general contractor builds the house; a finish carpenter is what makes the inside look finished. It is measured and cut to the room, because the room is never square, and the joints are what separate good from adequate.
Can crown molding be added to an existing room?
Yes, and it is one of the higher-return small projects in a house. Crown is cut to the corners, which are rarely 90 degrees, coped rather than mitered on inside corners so the joint stays closed as the house moves, filled, caulked and painted. A room with tall ceilings takes a larger profile; standard ceilings take a smaller one so it does not loom.
