Almost every mounting failure is an anchor failure. Drywall alone carries very little, and a television on drywall anchors is a matter of time. Finding framing, or adding blocking where there is none, is the job.
Cable management is what makes a mounted television look finished. Running cable in-wall with proper rated components takes an extra half hour and is the difference between a clean installation and a bundle of cords.

Can a TV be mounted on any wall?
On a drywall wall with studs, yes, with the mount screwed into the studs — not into drywall anchors, whatever the packaging says. On brick or block it is anchored into the masonry. Above a fireplace the heat and the viewing angle are worth a conversation. The cables can be run inside the wall to an outlet behind the TV if the wall allows it.
How do you hang something heavy where there is no stud?
With the right anchor for the wall and the load — toggle bolts in drywall for heavier items, masonry anchors in brick, and a cleat or a ledger for cabinets and large mirrors so the weight is carried on a rail screwed into studs. Plastic anchors and a prayer is how mirrors end up on the floor.
