How a drywall & patching visit goes
A patch that is flat and sanded will still show through paint if it is not primed, because bare joint compound absorbs differently from the wall around it. Priming the repair is the step that makes it disappear.
Texture matching is where this work is won or lost. A smooth patch on a knockdown wall is more obvious than the hole was, and getting the mud consistency and the technique right is what makes a repair invisible in raking light.

FAQ
Asked often about drywall & patching
Can you fix a hole in the wall so it does not show?
Yes. A small hole is patched, taped, floated in two or three coats and sanded; a large one gets a backing and a new piece of drywall. Then the texture is matched and the patch is primed and painted, usually corner to corner so the sheen does not flash. A repair that shows is one that skipped the texture or the paint.
How long does a drywall patch take?
Two visits for most: one to patch and float, because the compound needs to dry between coats, and one to sand, texture and paint. A single small patch can sometimes be done in a day with fast-setting compound. Several patches around the house are done together, which is the efficient way.
